Are Tree Roots Really Threatening Your Driveway Or Foundation?

Roots get blamed for a lot. Sometimes fairly, sometimes not. They can lift walkways, contribute to cracking in older hardscape, and invade already-compromised drainage systems. But strong, healthy roots are not usually drilling through sound concrete foundations on their own. More often, roots exploit existing weak points or shallow surfaces that were already vulnerable.

That distinction matters because the solution changes. In some cases, selective root work, pruning, or a surface repair plan is enough. In others, the tree is too close, too large, or too aggressive for the space and the long-term fix may involve removal and replacement with a better species. An honest assessment should look at the tree, the hardscape, the grading, and the age of the structure together.

Homeowners deserve a calm answer here, not a scare tactic. If roots are not the real problem, we will say so. If the tree is creating an ongoing structural headache, we will walk through the least destructive option first.
