When A Crack In The Trunk Is Just Cosmetic And When It Is Not

Not every crack means a tree is about to fail, but some absolutely deserve quick attention. Narrow frost cracks can look dramatic while remaining manageable. A deep seam that opens, runs through a union, or shows movement in the wind is a different story. Homeowners also need to pay attention to whether the crack is paired with mushrooms, decay, bulging bark, or a canopy that suddenly looks uneven.

Warning signs that raise the urgency

  • The crack is fresh, widening, or visibly deep.
  • It appears where two large stems join together.
  • You can see sap, decay, insect activity, or soft wood around the wound.
  • The tree has recently taken storm damage or developed a lean.

If you are unsure, do not tap it with tools or try to “test” it yourself. A careful assessment from the ground can usually tell us whether the next step is pruning, support, monitoring, or removal. The goal is not to alarm homeowners. It is to catch the truly risky cases early and avoid unnecessary work on the harmless ones.
